Appalachian Sanctuary
Where story
and healing meet.
A place to slow down, listen inward, and find your way forward.
A place to begin
Every path begins with a first step.
There are stories we carry quietly—stories shaped by what we've lived through, what we've lost, what we've survived, who we've become, and who we're still becoming.
Appalachian Sanctuary is a place for those stories.
I'm Khristofer Johnsen—a counselor-in-training, writer, and lifelong learner. My roots in rural Appalachia have shaped the way I understand people, healing, and the paths we walk through life.
The Trusted Hollow
A place to be seen.
A trusted hollow is a place of shelter—a space where we can step out of the noise for a while and be met with honesty, curiosity, compassion, and care.
I see every person as inherently capable of growth, healing, and navigating the world they live in.

We are more than
our thoughts.
Our bodies, relationships, identities, cultures, communities, histories, beliefs, and experiences all shape the way we move through the world.
Healing can involve understanding our thoughts and stories—but it can also involve listening to the wisdom held within our bodies, reconnecting with ourselves, and making meaning from what we've lived.
Carrying the Lantern Through the Thicket
Sometimes the path becomes difficult to see.
People come to counseling carrying grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, shame, questions of identity, changes in relationships, questions of meaning, or a longing for belonging.
You don't have to know exactly where the path leads. Sometimes the work is simply finding enough light for the next step.
The work
Room for the whole story.
